Shock waves are created in a pipe full of liquid when either a valve is closed too quickly, forcing the liquid column to stop moving more quickly than it wants to, or when a pump is started up too quickly, forcing the liquid column to start moving more quickly than it wants to. In either situation, the shock wave travels up and down the pipe through the liquid, banging against each end of the pipe.

	This banging can be heard as water hammer. Try it at home - turn on you tap, then turn it off very quickly. You should hear a bang, and maybe even several. If you turn the tap off more slowly, it should stay quite, as the liquid in the pipes slows down more gradually.

Understanding How it Works Shock alleviators and shock accumulators do not alleviate shock, nor do surge alleviators and surge accumulators alleviate surge. SurgeGuard, JumboFlex, and Floatolator all work in the same way. They provide a soft place, so that the pump does not have to instantly accelerate all the liquid in the pipe system when it starts. Similarly, they provide a place into which flow can continue, for a time, against increasing resistance, when a a valve has been slammed. In both cases, because time has been increased, peak pressure generation is decreased. In short, they all prevent the peak pressure from being generated. Water hammer in pipes is most often caused by valves and stopped by alleviators which allow flow velocity deceleration over more time, so stopping the Pressure from pumps impairing the safety by removing high pressure spikes followed by a low pressure swing. By allowing the flow velocity to be reduced progressively when valves are slammed closed, arresters prevent water hammer in pipes, and when pumps start fast they are stopped from making high and low pressure surges; both applications increase safety.
